The Six Pillars of

FOLLOWING CHRIST TOGETHER

the six pillars visual
“When our Lord and master Jesus Christ said, ‘Repent’, He willed the entire life of believers to be one of repentance.”
Martin Luther, 95 Theses, #1

REPENTANCE

THE WORD REPENTANCE MEANS TO
“turn” or to “think differently.” When Jesus begins to preach in Mark’s Gospel, he charges His hearers to “repent.” While some think of repentance occurring only at conversion, the Reformers rightly understood that “when our Lord and Master, Jesus Christ, said ‘Repent’, he meant that the entire life of believers should be one of repentance” (Luther, Thesis #1). At Providence Church, all that we do is based on a lifestyle of really following Jesus. Each day we turn from the world and ourselves to serve the Lord Jesus. As we follow Jesus, we want to actively live a life of repentance.

Now after John was arrested, Jesus came into Galilee, proclaiming the gospel of God, and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.”
Acts 3:18–19
“But what God foretold by the mouth of all the prophets, that this Christ would suffer, he thus fulfilled. Repent therefore, and turn back, that your sins may be blotted out”

CORPORATE WORSHIP

Corporate worship pillar visual
1
A LOCAL CHURCH IS AN
assembly of those who believe that Jesus is Savior and Lord. Scripture describes the church as a body made of different parts yet moving together towards Kingdom work. God’s people come together on Sunday to build each other up in the faith and use their gifts to promote Christian maturity. Let us worship in such a way that those who do not believe would encounter God and “declare that God is really among you” (1 Cor. 14:25).

“But what God foretold by the mouth of all the prophets, that this Christ would suffer, he thus fulfilled. Repent therefore, and turn back, that your sins may be blotted out”
Colossians 3:15–16
And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.

PERSONAL DEVOTIONS

2
JUST AS JESUS TOOK TIME TO PRAY PRIVATELY,
so also must God’s people spend time in the Word and in prayer outside of Sunday mornings. We want to equip each other to make prayer and Scripture reading a daily practice. There is no better way to grow as a believer than to regularly be reading and praying the scriptures. Staying connected to the Vine (John 15) allows us to be filled with the lifegiving nutrients that can only come from God.

Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.

Small Groups

3
WE ARE FOLLOWING CHRIST TOGETHER.
Scripture is replete with “one anothers”. Love one another (John 13:34). Forgive one another (Colossians 3:13). Encourage one another (1 Thes. 5:11). Show hospitality to one another (1 Peter 4.). Small groups are essential for relational depth and for the demonstration of Christian love. No one should feel anonymous. We want there to be great love for the body of Christ. Small Groups also provide relationships and avenues to live out the other Pillars of Following Christ Together especially in the areas of service, evangelism, and discipleship.

…rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer dishonor for the name. And every day, in the temple and from house to house, they did not cease teaching and preaching that the Christ is Jesus.
2 Corinthians 1:1–4
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.
Acts 2:42
And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.

JESUS CAME NOT TO BE SERVED BUT TO SERVE (MATTHEW 20:28)
Scripture is replete with “one anothers”. Love one another (John 13:34). Forgive one another (Colossians 3:13). Encourage one another (1 Thes. 5:11). Show hospitality to one another (1 Peter 4.). 1 PETER 4:10–11
As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace: whoever speaks, as one who speaks oracles of God; whoever serves, as one who serves by the strength that God supplies—in order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.
EPHESIANS4:11–12
And He gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ.

EVANGELISM

Evangelism pillar visual
5
THE CHRISTIAN MISSION INVOLVES SHARING THE GOOD NEWS OF JESUS
with those who do not know Him as Savior and Lord. We want to be active witnesses to what God has done in Jesus and invite others to follow Him by our words and actions.

How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!” …So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.
ACTS 1:8
“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

DISCIPLESHIP

Discipleship pillar visual
6
"GO MAKE DISCIPLES."
This is the core command of the Great Commission. A disciple is a follower of Jesus. At Providence, we believe more mature Christians ought to intentionally reproduce committed followers of Jesus. This means that every member should engage in strategic, Christ-centered relationships with the aim of edification in the faith.

And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
2 TIMOTHY 2:2
…and what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also.
