What to Expect
How do I Check in? The Children’s Ministry wants every parent and child to feel comfortable about staying in our care. A Children’s Ministry staff member will greet you as you enter the children’s wing. You will be asked to fill out an information card for your family. This card will include any information or instructions we need to know to best care for your child/ren. Your child/ren will be given a nametag with a security number and you will receive the corresponding number for pick-up. Please keep this number with you and be prepared to show it to the teacher to verify authorization to pick-up your child. Children will only be released to the parent with the corresponding number.
How are classes structured? Children are placed in classes based on their date of birth. Children under 2 years of age are promoted based on developmental progress. Children 2-years-old (Butterflies Class) through 6th grade (Horizon) are promoted once a year in the fall.
What if my child needs me? Pagers are available for any parent who would like to be called if they are needed. Regardless of your child’s age, you are welcome to take a pager with you. Once you have a pager, we can then discreetly call you if your child needs you to return to the Children’s wing.
When can we use the computer check-in system? When you feel your family is ready, we will place you in our computer system. You may then use the computer check-in kiosk to register your child’s attendance and receive their nametag and your security number. Any Children’s Ministry staff member will be glad to show you how to use the check-in system. It is very easy to use and saves you time on Sunday mornings.
The Children's Ministry staff and volunteers work hard to make sure that your child has a safe and welcoming experience. If you have questions or would like more information, please don't hesitate to contact our staff.

Nursery Policies
Health Please do not leave a child who is ill. If your child has had a fever, diarrhea, vomiting, congested cough, sore throat, lice, unexplained rash, pink eye (or other eye infection), skin infections, or green or yellow discharge from the nose within the last 24 hours, your child should not be in the nursery. This is for the comfort and health of all children and caregivers. If your child becomes ill within 24 hours of being in the nursery, please let us know so that the proper precautions can be taken.
Medication We will not give any medication to your child. If your child requires medication you will need to make arrangements to administer this yourself.
Diaper Changing The caregivers will check all babies each hour they are in the nursery. Be sure that you have supplies for changing (diapers/wipes) in your child’s bag. Please include an extra diaper and a change of clothes.
Crying We ask that parents and other family members not look in on your child. We will not allow your child to cry for a long period of time. You will be paged if we cannot calm your child within 10–15 minutes. If you have specific requests regarding this issue please communicate them with the nursery workers upon leaving your child. A nursing room is available in the interior of the nursery or in the ladies rest room.
Food Please do not send any food item other than formula/juice (labeled with your child’s name) into the nursery. Please bring bottles already prepared, as each person prepares them differently.
Personal Items Please label all of your child’s belongings. Parents are responsible to keep track of any personal items brought into the nursery. Please do not bring toys from home and have your child’s pacifier clipped to his/her clothing.
Elementary
Children's Ministry Summer Schedule During the summer months, children are encouraged to attend worship services with their parents and participate in the Kids Worship Club!
To participate, kindergarten through 5th grade students can pick up a Kids Worship Club bulletin from the ushers as they enter the worship center. Each bulletin has fun activities and puzzles to do and questions to answer about the worship service. After the service, kids can show their completed bulletin to a Children’s Ministry staff member and receive a “reward” for the day (pencils, bookmarks, etc). This is a fun way to get kids engaged in what is happening in the worship service.
Classes are available during each Sunday morning service for newborns through preschool-aged children. The fall kick-off will be on September 12!! Regularly scheduled classes will resume on this date.
The Children’s Ministry is very excited to be participating with the church-wide series, Got Conflict?. Children in 3rd-6th grade will be using the Young Peacemaker curriculum series during their Sunday School hour. Children in 1st and 2nd grade will have a short, 10 minute lesson during music time and preschool children will talk about a word or phrase for the day. Children will cover the same 12 key principles that their parents are studying. Topics to be included are: What is at the heart of conflict? How can I go and talk to someone if we are in a fight? Is it possible to honor God by my response to conflict?
Student Activity books are available to purchase for $5.00 (a 12-book packet). These books are written in a “comic book” style and are will help spur God centered conversation with your children about rightly handling conflict in their lives. Sunday Morning In keeping with the BASICS, the elementary ministry desires to teach kids Biblical truth in an atmosphere that is safe, fun, age appropriate, and nurturing.
On Sunday mornings, a different class is offered each hour for students in kindergarten through the fourth grade so that parents can stay for both the worship service and a FOCUS Workshop. Join us in the children’s wing and a member of the Children’s Ministry staff will direct you to the appropriate classroom for your child.
Horizon During the school year, all pre-teens (5th and 6th grade) are invited to the Sunday morning Horizon class designed especially for them. This class introduces “tweens” to each other and to older Christian adults who can help prepare and guide them through the quickly approaching changes in life, school, and church. Outside of Sunday mornings, the Horizon group gets together for social outings and service projects to help them have fun, make friends, and put their faith into action.

Children’s Welcome Center Greeter (commitment: before each service, once a month) Greeters meet new families as they enter the children’s wing, check children in at the Welcome Center, and escort them to the proper classroom.
Children’s Music Team (commitment: Sundays vary, 15 minutes during one service) The Children’s Music Team combines their love for song and for children together in this unique ministry opportunity. You’ll love teaching children’s songs and leading music.
Bulletin Boards (commitment: two hours per month) The Children’s Ministry appreciates volunteers who will decorate and update the Children’s Ministry bulletin boards. A creative eye and a willing hand can be a very big blessing to others.
Summer Teaching Team (commitment: one Sunday per month, June, July, and August) We like to give our regular teachers a break during the summer. This low commitment teaching position is a great way to serve by overseeing a classroom of preschool children during the summer.
Substitute Teacher (commitment: as needed) If you are unable to commit to a weekly routine but would love to serve in the Children’s Ministry, consider serving as a sub. Substitute teachers follow the curriculum already in place.
Administrative Assistant (commitment: flexible) The Children’s Ministry often needs help making copies, laminating, labeling, collating packets, filing records, preparing mailings, and entering data. The extra help is especially useful during the busiest seasons of August and May. All levels of computer skills and administrative savvy are welcome.
Nursery & Preschool
Nursery Staff (commitment: one Sunday a month, both hours) Providence’s nursery workers care for the youngest members of our church family, giving parents time to focus entirely on the worship service and attend a FOCUS Workshop.
Preschool Teacher (commitment: Sundays, two months on/two months off, one service) Preschool teachers engage the children and present a simple Bible lesson, facilitate music, play time, and a snack. Curriculum and teaching support is provided.
Weekday Child Care Staff (commitment: two hours per week, September through May) In order to minister to mothers, volunteers are needed to watch and teach preschool aged children for women’s events during the day. Moppets Program (every other Monday morning) Preschool Program (every Wednesday morning)
Elementary & Horizons Kindergarten - 6th Grade
Sunday School Teacher (commitment: two months on/two months off, one service) Elementary teachers have the very significant and joyful task of teaching God’s truth to the growing minds and open hearts of our children. Teachers in the elementary classes present their lessons based on the curriculum selected by the Children’s Ministry Team.
Sunday School Aid (commitment: two months on/two months off, one service) A teacher’s aid helps children with activities and helps the teacher with whatever tasks need assistance. The teacher’s aid does not present the main lesson.
Awana Leader (commitment: Tuesday evenings, September through May) Help lead a group of children through the games, story, and music activities of Awana club nights. No advance preparation is needed for the position, only a love for the Word and for the children.
VBS Crew Leader (commitment: weekday mornings, one week per year) Each year, the Children’s Ministry presents Vacation Bible School for Providence families and the surrounding communities. Crew leaders lead groups of children through games, Bible stories, songs, drama, and more. Look for information about opportunities to serve coming this spring.
Sports Camps (commitment: weekday mornings, one week per year)
Assistant Coach If you have a heart for children and have experience playing or coaching either soccer or basketball, consider joining the Sports Camps coaching team.
Behind the Scenes Sports Camps aren’t just about running, jumping, and playing - there is much more work to be done! Administrative tasks, helping with snacks, and organizational skill sets are needed as well.
